Knox County Tobacco-Free Workplace Survey 2013 Results
A total of 65 Knox County workplaces were surveyed from the governmental, private, and nonprofit sectors. Of those surveyed, 24 have a written policy regarding tobacco use in the workplace. Twenty-four workplaces have verbal rules regarding tobacco use, and 17 have no policy or rules.
Of the workplaces with no policy or rules, the majority (13) said they are not interested in a tobacco-free policy. Various reasons for not wanting a policy include a small staff, no perceived need, or a workplace culture that includes smoking. Two workplaces want a tobacco-free policy, and two are unsure.
About half of those surveyed (33) post signs indicating where tobacco use is prohibited. Thirty-one workplaces do not post signs, and one workplace was unsure about signs posted.
For the workplaces that do have a policy or rules regarding tobacco use, the majority (31) prohibit tobacco use indoors only. Eleven prohibit smoking indoors and outdoors. Some local businesses have unique tobacco use policies, such as allowing customers to smoke, but not employees. Other businesses have certain areas where smoking is allowed, and the rest of the building is tobacco-free, and others prohibit smoking indoors and outdoors within 25 feet of doors and windows. Of the workplaces that have written or verbal tobacco-free policies (47), the majority (39) feel that the policy is highly supported.
